Case study

HCD Economics

HCD Economics has been based in The Innovation Centre at Sci-Tech Daresbury since 2013.

The business was created out of an alliance with University of Chester, charities and health service sectors in response to the ever-growing demand for economic analysis within healthcare and third sectors.

Unique insight and perspective

Through these partnerships, HCD provides a unique insight and perspective, focusing our analyses on what matters to patients as well as decision-makers.

When it located at Sci-Tech Daresbury, HCD had a staff of four and at the end of its first year a turnover of around £240k. Staff has now risen to 17 people and the turnover has increased to £1.3m at December 2016. In 2016, HCD recruited six new members of staff.

Paul Johnston, Chief Financial Officer said: “It was Sci-Tech Daresbury’s location that appealed between Liverpool and Manchester which is where the biggest talent pools are for recruitment, because we look to employ people who have degrees in health economics. Also here at Sci-Tech Daresbury there are many potential connections to make with other on-site companies which can help our business development and growth.

Our USP comes from the fact that we make our data available to patient groups and charities as well as clients. This brings more credibility and our key clients appreciate the extra value that creates.

Paul also anticipates further growth: “We plan to recruit as many as four more high calibre people by the end of 2017 in line with our ambition to develop the business in other areas.”
