Advanced Engineering and Materials

Sci-Tech Daresbury is home to a thriving cluster of organisations and networks including over 30 advanced engineering and materials companies with expertise in controls technologies, modelling and simulation technologies, instrumentation and novel materials.

It has led research on graphene and met the advanced engineering challenges of building detectors that have enabled the discovery of a Higgs-Boson like particle at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

It has addressed and supported many critical manufacturing issues including:

  • Materials characterisation using x-rays, neutrons and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopes
  • Materials modelling and simulation
  • Smart materials and novel material development
  • Radiation hard electronics, simulation and modelling
  • Nanotechnology and microstructures
  • Breakthroughs in surface treatments, composite reinforcements and material fatigue.

In particular this is supported by the world-class capabilities of the Hartree Centre, home to one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world dedicated to industrial engagement and working with clients to produce better products and services – faster & cheaper versus conventional technology; and the Virtual Engineering Centre  which helps engineering companies exploit emergent virtual engineering and VR technologies.

Recent investments on-site include the Campus Technology Hub a purpose-built engineering facility that enables SMEs to explore and exploit 3D printing capabilities to accelerate product development.

Sci-Tech Daresbury has strong links into regional organisations such as the North West Aerospace Alliance, Northern Automotive Alliance, Chemicals North West, the IET NW and the regional university activities including Sensor city (Liverpool) and the materials development activities (Liverpool and Manchester).
