STFC Work Experience Programme

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations supporting scientists and engineers and running experiments around the UK and world-wide. Activities carried out cover a wide range of science, engineering and technology, including materials science, engineering and instrumentation, particle physics, space science, accelerator-based technologies, information technology and computer science.

Inspiring young people and the wider public is one of the STFC’s main objectives. This is achieved through a focused programme of public engagement, promoting careers in science, engineering and technology to maintain the quality of the UK programme.
Daresbury Laboratory (DL), Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) offer work experience placements to Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 students each year, many from local schools and around the country. As far as possible they are placed depending on their interests indicated on the application form.

From Chester/North Wales

Follow directions towards Manchester on the M56, leaving at Junction 11 towards Warrington. Sci-Tech Daresbury is signposted to the left at the traffic lights after 1.5 miles.

From Liverpool

South towards the Airport A533 and over the Runcorn bridge. Stay in the left lane for Manor Park, then follow A558 passing Keckwick. Signs for Sci-Tech Daresbury to the right are at the traffic lights.

Train Travel

Warrington (WAC)

Served by Northern, First TransPennine Express and East Midlands Trains, Warrington Central station provides regular services between Liverpool and Manchester.

Warrington (WBQ)

Served by Virgin Trains, Northern and Arriva Trains Wales, Warrington Bank station provides access to both important local links and high speed national rail services on the West Coast Mainline.

Runcorn (RNC)

Served by Virgin Trains and London Midland, Runcorn station sites between Liverpool and access to the south via the West Coast Mainline.

Runcorn East (RUE)

Served by Northern and Arriva Trains Wales, Runcorn East provides important links between Manchester and Chester.

Bus Travel

200 (Arriva)

This service operates on a circular route every 30 minute to 45 Minutes in the peaks and every hour throughout the day, linking Sci-Tech Daresbury to various locations within Runcorn and Preston Brook.

62A (Warrington's Own Buses)

This service operates between Warrington and Sci-Tech Daresbury in the AM and PM peak periods, via Stockton Heath and Walton.

X30 (Arriva)

This service operates between Warrington and Chester, via Daresbury and Runcorn. In the morning and evening peak periods this service comes into campus but is otherwise available from stops on Chester Road (A56).
