Daresbury Laboratory is renowned for its world leading scientific research in fields such as computational science, physics, chemistry, materials, accelerator technology and engineering.
Part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the laboratory supports scientists, researchers and industry by providing a collaborative environment to perform cutting-edge research and innovation.
The tower was a ‘particle smasher’ which created energy and was used to experiment on samples, it produced 30 million volts of static electricity.
Known as the Nuclear Structure Facility (NSF), it was designed and built by scientists at Daresbury, and used intense ion beams to help reveal the properties of the atomic nucleus under extreme conditions. During its lifetime it accelerated 80 different ion beams in experimental use, protons to uranium, rare isotopic and radioactive beams.
